It topped out at or just below 30 °C here today, and it was hard going being outdoors in the afternoon, so I kept that to a minimum. UV of 7 as well, and that's almost as high as it gets in the UK. (8 is just possible in the south, but only for a few days each summer.) In the evening I went with a couple of other people to see Ocean, the new David Attenborough film, at St George's Hall in town. Very good in the usual Attenborough style, though as usual some of it was pretty sad in terms of what huge trawlers are doing to marine ecosystems. I'll do an actual film review post of it sometime in the next week.

My photo today is of the shop-and-café combo run by Happy Staffie Rescue, a local dog rescue charity. I passed by with an ice cream (from Teddy Gray's) in late morning. As those who know me will appreciate, I am not a dog person at all, but I'm thoroughly in favour of rescue (though not that it's needed...) and so I patronise this place fairly often. The near shop has a coffee shop taking up most of the space, with books for sale on shelves around the sides. The other shop sells a more usual selection of charity shop bits and pieces, from clothes to bric-a-brac to toys and games.

Today is partly sunny and mild.  It rained yesterday.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/19/25 -- We went out for a while and saw the library wildflower meadow, Fox Ridge, and the Charleston Food Forest.

EDIT 6/19/25 -- I refilled the thistle feeder that was half empty.

EDIT 6/19/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

New butterfly species wows scientists: 'This discovery reveals a lineage shaped by 40,000 years of evolutionary solitude'

The Satyrium semiluna, or half-moon hairstreak, is a small gray butterfly that looks like a moth at first glance. The wildflower lovers are widespread across North America, from the Sagebrush steppe to the montane meadows of the Rocky Mountains.

But tucked away in the southeastern corner of Alberta, Canada, another colony of butterflies flaps across the Blakiston Fan landform of Waterton Lakes National Park.

Until now, they were thought to be a subpopulation of half-moon hairstreaks — until scientists made a phenomenal discovery: They were a new species of butterfly that had hidden in plain sight for centuries.

The researchers, who recently published their findings in the scientific journal ZooKeys, defined the new species as Satyrium curiosolus

I didn't use this video in Heather Cox Richardson explains 'What is Juneteenth and Why Does it Matter: A Short History', but I did use the next video on the subject from the same source.

Having visiting hours not start until 11am has really helped with being able to get stuff done before I go out.

I had a chiropractic appointment this morning. I didn’t do any shopping, but I did get in a longer walk around the park. I did a load of laundry, a load in the dishwasher, the usual amount of hand-washing dishes, and scooped kitty litter. I read more (currently one of the Duncan Kincaid books).

Temps started out at 66.7(F) and reached 83.8. It was overcast with some sprinkles in the morning, then the sun came out in the afternoon. It was so humid! For the first time since it was hot back in May we had to use the AC in the bedroom.

Mom Update:

Mom was still doing well, but she was more tired today. She’d had some issues, one of which may have contributed to her being so tired. more back here )

I guess I don't have a whole lot to say about it, at least here.

Maybe I should?

I need some chocolate milk and donuts.

Today was warm and muggy.  It stormed midday, then cleared up somewhat later.

I fed the birds.

I put out water for the birds.

At dusk, loads of fireflies are coming out.  :D  I've seen at least one bat too.

Caldwall Castle, Kidderminster, 18th June 2025
138/365: Caldwall Castle, Kidderminster
Click for a larger, sharper image

It's been a very warm day today -- the humidity that tends to accompany heat in this country means that even the high 20s °C can be quite tough to deal with if you actually have to do very much. In 2022 I experienced an extremely rare 36 ºC with dry heat in this country, and I actually found that easier to cope with. My photo for today comes from Kidderminster. This is Caldwall Castle, though its alternative name of Caldwall Tower is more accurate as the rest of the castle disappeared centuries ago. That was begun in 1347, but this tower itself probably dates from around 1500. Either way, it is likely to be the oldest secular building in Kidderminster. It is still used as a family home; note the TV aerial on the roof!

What I Just Finished Reading: Since last Wednesday I have read/finished reading: System Collapse (The Murderbot Diaries) by Martha Wells, The Body in the Garden (A Lily Adler Mystery) by Katharine Schellman, and Martinis and Mayhem (A Murder, She Wrote Mystery) by Donald Bain.

What I am Currently Reading: Water Like a Stone (A Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James Mystery) by Deborah Crombie.

What I Plan to Read Next: Still a variety of library books out and even more on request, so a library book.

Book 43 of 2025: System Collapse (The Murderbot Diaries) (Martha Wells)

This book was so good! spoilers )

So good! I still have one book left because I was forewarned that this one immediately followed Network Effect. I’m obviously giving this one five hearts.

♥♥♥♥♥

Book 44 of 2025: The Body in the Garden (A Lily Adler Mystery) (Katharine Schellman)

I liked this book a lot. spoilers )

I enjoyed this book and have already requested the second in the series from the library. I'm giving this one five hearts.

♥♥♥♥♥

Book 45 of 2025: Martinis & Mayhem (A Murder, She Wrote Mystery) (Donald Bain)

I enjoyed this book (though you know I'll have something to say about it in a future M[F]M post). spoilers )

I'm happy to see that these books are getting better, even though there are still some inconsistencies (within the book and with the show). I'm giving it four hearts.

One of my favorite things is when there's a bunch of dark, stormy clouds piling up, but then the sun rises and its rays are shining beneath that cloud layer, so they're lighting up the trees. The pines look golden and glowing against this iron-gray sky and it's incredible.

I need to stop being amazed by life and go finish mowing the yard though. It's probably going to rain.

My sister A wanted to go out to see mom at 11am; I’m relieving her around 3pm (timing at her request), so I had time to get some shopping and other chores done. I went downtown so I could go to Walmart.

Mom stuff: While at Walmart I picked up some items that mom had requested I get for her eventual convalescence at home; dropped by her house to get her mail; and stopped in at the bank to make sure they had a copy of her POA on file (since she has me signing checks to pay bills while she’s in the hospital). They did not. The process took way longer than I expected; it’s such a rigamarole now. (On the plus side, I got a call after just an hour and a half saying it had been approved, so I’m good to go.)

I passed Sunnycrest, so I stopped in to see if they had those beef sticks for Pip. They did! Just one package, but it’s something.

I did a load of laundry, hit Stewart’s on the way home, baked chicken for the dogs, did the usual amount of hand-washing dishes, and changed kitty litter. (Dear lord, that was a stinky job. My fault because I let it go longer than usual. Lesson learned. Hopefully.)

I started reading a new book and obviously got to visit mom.

Time is warping and I thought today was Wednesday so I took my Trulicity injection a day early. o_O

Temps started out at 59.0(F) and reached 74. At a guess. I hate not being home in the afternoon to check the temp.

Mom Update:

Mom was doing much better today! MUCH better. more )

Cuddle Party

Everyone needs contact comfort sometimes. Not everyone has ample opportunities for this in facetime. So here is a chance for a cuddle party in cyberspace. Virtual cuddling can help people feel better.

We have a
cuddle room that comes with fort cushions, fort frames, sheets for draping, and a weighted blanket. A nest full of colorful egg pillows sits in one corner. There is a basket of grooming brushes, hairbrushes, and styling combs. A bin holds textured pillows. There is a big basket of craft supplies along with art markers, coloring pages, and blank paper. The kitchen has a popcorn machine. Labels are available to mark dietary needs, recipe ingredients, and level of spiciness. Here is the bathroom, open to everyone. There is a lawn tent and an outdoor hot tub. Bathers should post a sign for nude or clothed activity. Come snuggle up!

For the upcoming 4th of July, enjoy some of my previous posts about fireworks. Watch a video of fireworks going off and fireworks fail.

Today's Smoothie

Today we made a smoothie with:

1 cup Brown Cow vanilla yogurt
about 1 to 1 1/2 cups fresh seedless watermelon chunks
1 frozen banana
about 2/3 cup frozen strawberries
1 teaspoon lime juice

The result is bright pink and a little thicker with the frozen banana, with a notable watermelon flavor. This is a definite improvement over the previous version and I quite like it. \o/

Where do migratory birds have their home?

Below are just three screenshots from a series of 16 photos on the Instagram account of somadifusa (Laura Ortiz), of murals she and the tattoo artist Azul Luna (Instagram account azulunailustra) painted in Bogota, Colombia.

I'm captivated by these images both of traveling swallows, some bearing backpacks and baskets, some with shells on their back like hermit crabs, and of hearts that are also nests, or that morph into shells, or sprout flowers and eyes. "Home is where the heart is," or the heart makes the home

Teddy Gray's, Bewdley, 17th June 2025
137/365: Teddy Gray's sweetshop, Bewdley
Click for a larger, sharper image

Earlier this month, I posted a picture of a Teddy Gray's van. Today, I'm posting a picture of the sweetshop it was delivering to! This is Teddy Gray's in Bewdley, one of the town's most famous shops. It's right next to the river bridge (just out of shot on the left) and in Load Street, the town's main artery. I don't go in there much these days as sugary sweets aren't the ideal food for diabetics and their ice cream isn't quite the utter bargain it used to be, but I'm always pleased to see it. The shop was opened shortly after WW2 and barring modern hygiene standards and metrication it hasn't changed much, with a sympathetic restoration about 15 years ago. It remains a cash only business, so this is one town where the schoolkids passing by on their way home certainly do not rely entirely on their phones!
